Essential is a youth empowerment program that is part of the South Philadelphia Prevention Coalition. The objective of Essential is for students to learn personal responsibility and community action. This is a substance prevention program for middle to high school grade students who desire an advocacy role, have a serving heart, and want to positively impact their school culture. The program will revolve around three key factors: enriching student learning, activism, and peer accountability.

Youth cigarette use has been cut in have in the past 10 years; declined from 13% in 2002 to 5% in 2014



underage drinking

Underage drinking for youth 12-20 has decreased from 28.8% in 2002 to 22.8% in 2014



Marijuana usage in teens

3 out of 5 teens agree that teenagers who use marijuana are more likely to try heroin.      (See Infographic below)
